How to add a link to your Instagram bio

Instagram lets every account add up to five profile links. The steps in the app, how the links display, what Instagram tells you about taps, and how to track clicks yourself.

    LinkPilot Team · About LinkPilot

Instagram lets any account put up to five links on its profile, and it has done so since April 2023.[1][2] The feature is easy to miss because the profile shows only the first link and hides the rest behind a tap. This post covers the steps, how the links display, what Instagram tells you about who tapped, and how to get real click data from the one link that matters.

Steps are for the Instagram app as of 19 October 2026. Instagram moves menu items from time to time; if your screen differs, the app wins.

    The short version

    • Where: Edit profile → Links → Add external link.
    • How many: up to five, on personal, creator and business accounts alike.
    • How they show: the first link appears under your bio; tapping it opens a sheet with the others.
    • Who clicked: Instagram does not tell you. Professional accounts get a tap count in insights; a tracked link gives you the rest.

Step by step, in the app

    1. Open Instagram and go to your profile.
    2. Tap Edit profile.
    3. Tap Links.
    4. Tap Add external link, paste the URL (include https://), and give it a short title if you want one. The title is what viewers see; the URL is what they open.
    5. Tap Done. Repeat for up to five links.
    6. To reorder, open Links again and drag the handles. The link at the top is the one shown on the profile.

Links are set up in the app. Once added they are visible to people on the desktop site too, but the editing screen is a phone feature.

Only the first link is visible on the profile. It appears as a short label under your bio. When someone taps it, Instagram shows a sheet listing every link you added, in your order. Two practical effects:

    • The first link gets almost all the taps, because it is the only one a viewer sees without doing anything. Put the destination you most want traffic to go to at the top.
    • The others are a menu, not a feed. Treat them as the three or four places you always want reachable (shop, newsletter, booking), not as this week's post.

Does Instagram tell you who clicked?

No. Instagram never identifies the person who tapped a profile link. What a professional account (creator or business) can see in its insights is a count of website taps for a period. A personal account sees nothing.

If you want to know when the taps happen, where they come from and which post caused them, make the bio link a tracked link. A short link records each click with the time, the country and the referrer, and you can change its destination without touching your profile. The free Instagram bio link shortener makes one without an account; link analytics explains what LinkPilot records on each click and what it does not (no cookies on the visitor, IP addresses hashed).

Five links covers most people. If you need more, or you want the destinations laid out with images and headings, a link-in-bio page is the usual answer: one URL in the first slot, everything else on the page behind it. The best Linktree alternatives post compares the page builders on free links, analytics, custom domains and branding.

If one changing link is enough, skip the page. A short link you repoint for each launch is simpler, and it is the only option that tells you which post sent the tap.

    Common problems

    • No Links option. Update the app and check you are on Edit profile for your own account, not a business page you manage elsewhere.
    • Link rejected. Instagram blocks some domains it has flagged for spam. A short link on a neutral domain usually goes through; check the destination itself is not the problem.
    • Wrong link showing. Only the top link displays. Reorder in Links.
    • Taps but no visits. The link may be slow or going through several redirects. The redirect checker shows the chain.
