    Why WhatsApp click-to-chat works

Customers won't pull out a phone, switch apps, type a number, and start a chat. They will scan a QR.

wa.me links open WhatsApp directly with your number pre-loaded; you can also pre-fill a message to lower friction further.

The wa.me URL format is strict in one place people constantly get wrong: the phone number must be the full international number with country code and without any plus sign, zeros, dashes, or spaces — wa.me/15555550123, not wa.me/+1 (555) 555-0123. A malformed number doesn't error visibly; it just opens WhatsApp to a dead end, and you'll never know how many customers you lost to it. Test the exact link on a real phone before printing.

The pre-filled message is the underrated half of the feature. A blank chat window puts the burden of 'what do I even say?' on the customer; a pre-filled 'Hi, I'd like to book a table for' gets deleted by nobody and answered by everyone. It also routes for you — different pre-filled texts for orders, support, and bookings let staff triage conversations at a glance, effectively giving one phone number multiple front doors.

Everything after ?text= must be URL-encoded: spaces become %20, apostrophes %27, ampersands %26. An unencoded ampersand silently truncates the message. This generator handles the encoding, but if you ever hand-edit a link, re-test it — a half-message in the customer's composer looks broken and erodes trust.

For businesses running WhatsApp Business, the QR pairs naturally with catalogs, automated greetings, and away messages — the scan starts the conversation and your automation handles the first response even when the shop is closed. That combination (always-scannable QR plus auto-reply) is the closest a small business gets to 24/7 availability without hiring anyone.

One operational honesty note: a WhatsApp QR publishes your number to everyone who scans. Use a business number, not a personal one, and remember that changing numbers later breaks every printed code — route through a LinkPilot short link if there's any chance the number changes, so the printed QR survives the migration.

    Common use cases

    Storefront support

Let walk-in customers ask questions without queuing — and keep answering them after they've left the shop.

    Restaurant orders

Take orders or reservations through WhatsApp directly from the table, with a pre-filled message that tells staff exactly which table is asking.

    Event Q&A

Collect audience questions during talks via a single QR on the slide — lower friction than a Q&A app nobody wants to install.

    Service businesses

Plumbers, salons, and repair shops put the QR on vans, invoices, and door hangers — a scanned chat converts far better than 'call us during business hours'.

    Delivery inserts

A 'problem with your order? Chat with us' QR inside the package intercepts complaints before they become public reviews.
