Modern phones (iOS 11+ and Android 10+) recognize a special WIFI: payload format and prompt the user to join the network with one tap.

The payload format matters more than it looks: WIFI:T:WPA;S:MyNetwork;P:MyPassword;; encodes the security type (T), network name (S), and password (P). If your SSID or password contains a semicolon, comma, colon, or backslash, it must be escaped with a backslash or many phones will silently fail to parse the code. Testing with both an iPhone and an Android device before printing is the single best QA step you can take.
Security type is the field people get wrong. Use 'WPA' for WPA/WPA2/WPA3 personal networks (phones treat the value loosely and negotiate the real protocol during join), 'nopass' for open networks, and be aware that WEP is effectively dead — if your router still runs WEP, upgrading it is more urgent than printing signage. Networks using enterprise authentication (WPA2-Enterprise with per-user logins) can't be joined via a standard WiFi QR at all.
Because the QR encodes credentials directly, it works with no internet connection — unlike URL-based codes, nothing is fetched. The flip side is permanence: the printed code is a snapshot. If you rotate the guest password, every printed QR dies at once. Businesses that rotate passwords regularly should either commit to reprinting or choose a stable guest-network password with client isolation enabled on the router instead.
Placement drives usage. Table-tents and eye-level wall stickers get scanned; codes near the till get ignored during payment anxiety, and codes behind the bar force staff conversations the QR was meant to eliminate. Print at 2.5 cm (1 inch) minimum for tabletop distance, larger for wall mounting, and keep strong contrast — decorative low-contrast codes fail in dim restaurant lighting.
One honest caveat: a WiFi QR shares your password with everyone who scans it, and phones store the joined network like any other. Treat the guest network as public — put it on a separate VLAN or the router's guest mode, isolate it from your point-of-sale and office devices, and you can hand out access freely without worrying about who scanned the sticker.
