## Tracking YouTube descriptions and ads

Description links are the easiest YouTube conversion lever — and the easiest to leave untagged. UTMs let you see which videos drive real traffic, not just views.

Pair utm_source=youtube with a utm_content that identifies the video (slug or ID) so you can attribute revenue down to a single upload.

YouTube's link surfaces each behave differently and deserve different tags: the description (persistent, high volume), pinned comments (cheaper to edit after upload), channel-page links, community posts, and — for channels with access to the relevant features — cards and end screens. A viewer clicking your end screen is in a very different mindset than one reading the description mid-video; separate utm_content values let you see that difference.

Description links age unusually well. Unlike a tweet, a YouTube video keeps earning search and suggested-feed traffic for years, which means the UTMs you write today are the attribution you'll have in 2028. That argues for durable, self-explanatory values (utm_content=ep-42-gear-guide) over cryptic ones you'll forget the meaning of.

Mobile viewers — the majority on YouTube — tap links in the YouTube app, which typically hands off to an in-app browser or the system browser depending on platform and settings. Referrer information is inconsistent across those paths, so untagged YouTube traffic tends to smear across 'youtube.com', 'm.youtube.com', and 'direct'. Tagged URLs collapse all of it into one clean source.

A practical workflow for channels at scale: build the tagged URL when you write the description (this tool plus a naming sheet), and shorten it if the raw URL is long — long parameter strings look untrustworthy in a description and invite truncated copy-pastes. If you edit descriptions in bulk later, spot-check that your tags survived; description rewrites are a classic place UTMs quietly disappear.

For paid, keep utm_medium distinct from organic (paid-video vs video) so ad-driven visits never inflate your organic content metrics. Google Ads auto-tagging (gclid) applies to YouTube campaigns run through Google Ads and coexists with your UTMs — you'll want both if you report anywhere beyond Google's own tools.

## Common use cases

### Video descriptions

Tag the first link in every description with the video slug to track per-video conversion — the backbone metric for deciding what content to make more of.

### Pinned comments

Distinguish description clicks from pinned-comment clicks — they behave very differently, and pinned comments can be added or swapped without editing the video.

### YouTube Ads

Tag TrueView and Shorts ads so spend efficiency can be evaluated in your analytics alongside gclid-based reporting in Google Ads.

### Community posts

Tag links in community-tab posts separately — they reach subscribers between uploads and convert differently from video-driven clicks.

### Sponsor and affiliate slots

If your descriptions carry sponsor or affiliate links alongside your own, tag your own links clearly so your site traffic is never confused with pass-through partner clicks.
