## Tracking X / Twitter clicks correctly

X strips the t.co wrapper from outbound links but preserves your UTMs. Without them, X traffic looks like 'direct' or 'unknown referrer' in many analytics tools.

Use utm_source=twitter (legacy convention beats utm_source=x for now — most analytics dashboards still expect it) plus a utm_campaign per launch or thread.

Every link you post gets wrapped in t.co, X's redirect service, regardless of length. The wrapper resolves to your full URL with query string intact — but the referrer your analytics sees is t.co, not twitter.com, and some tools classify t.co poorly. UTM-tagged links classify themselves; untagged ones depend on your analytics vendor's referrer rules.

Where you place the link changes performance and measurement. Links in the first post of a thread, in replies, and in the bio each reach different audiences at different intent levels — and X's feed treatment of posts containing external links has shifted repeatedly over the years. Tag each placement distinctly (utm_content=thread, reply, bio) so you can see what actually works for your account rather than relying on folklore.

Mobile clicks open in X's in-app browser with sandboxed cookie storage, so returning visitors from X often appear new. As everywhere, UTMs don't fix cookie loss but they do guarantee correct per-session source attribution — the layer you can actually control.

The copy-paste economy is strong on X: your link gets quoted, screenshot-and-retyped, and pasted into group chats. A tagged URL keeps its campaign attribution through every re-share; the trade-off is that a viral repost carries the original tags, so a 'thread' tag may accumulate traffic from reposts of that thread. That's usually the attribution you want — credit flows to the content that started it.

Keep an eye on your analytics for the source splitting problem: without deliberate tagging, X traffic can smear across 't.co', 'twitter.com', 'x.com', and 'direct'. Standardizing on utm_source=twitter collapses all of it into one row you can trend over time — and if you later migrate to utm_source=x, do it on a documented date so year-over-year comparisons stay possible.

## Common use cases

### Threads & launches

Tag the link inside a launch thread so its impact can be measured separately from later tweets — and from the reposts that thread earns.

### X Ads

Distinguish paid promotion from organic so spend efficiency is clear in your analytics, not just in X's ads dashboard.

### Reply links

Track high-performing reply links separately — replies often outperform top-level tweets for accounts that engage in larger conversations.

### Bio link

Your bio link collects clicks from every post that makes someone visit your profile. Tag it with utm_content=bio so profile-driven traffic has its own line.

### Community and DM shares

Links dropped into X Communities or DMs send little to no referrer. Tagged URLs are the only way that traffic credits back to your X presence.
