## Tracking LinkedIn traffic correctly

LinkedIn is one of the noisiest sources to attribute: organic posts, Sponsored Content, Message Ads, and employee shares all collapse into the same referrer unless you tag them.

Standardize utm_source=linkedin across the board, then differentiate with utm_medium (social, paid-social, inmail) and a clear utm_campaign per initiative.

There's a mobile wrinkle worth understanding: most LinkedIn clicks on phones open in LinkedIn's in-app browser, not the user's default browser. In-app browsers keep their own sandboxed cookie storage, so returning visitors often look like new visitors and multi-touch journeys get fragmented. UTMs are your insurance policy here — they attribute the landing session correctly even when cookies can't stitch the journey together.

LinkedIn also routes many shared URLs through its lnkd.in redirect. Your query string survives the hop, but the HTTP referrer often doesn't — which is exactly why referrer-based reports show LinkedIn traffic leaking into 'direct'. A tagged URL is immune to referrer loss.

Expect LinkedIn Campaign Manager and your analytics tool to disagree — often noticeably. Campaign Manager counts chargeable clicks at the moment of the tap; your analytics counts sessions that actually loaded and fired JavaScript. Users who bounce before the page renders, block scripts, or get filtered as bots create the gap. Don't chase parity — use UTMs to compare trends and relative creative performance across both systems.

Naming conventions matter more on LinkedIn than almost anywhere else because so many people post on the company's behalf. Lock in lowercase-with-hyphens values, a documented utm_campaign scheme (for example q3-product-launch), and reserve utm_content for the creative or the individual poster. Keep the canonical tagged URLs in a shared doc so nobody improvises 'LinkedIn', 'Linkedin', and 'linked-in' as three different sources.

The most common LinkedIn attribution failures are mundane: an employee copy-pastes last quarter's tagged URL into a new post, a newsletter edition ships with untagged links, or a Document Ad links out with no parameters at all. A quick pre-publish check of every outbound URL — this builder makes that a ten-second job — prevents weeks of polluted reporting.

## Common use cases

### Sponsored Content

Tag each ad creative so you can compare spend efficiency in your analytics, not just LinkedIn Campaign Manager. With utm_content per creative you can see which carousel, video, or single-image ad actually produced signups — not just clicks.

### Organic posts

Distinguish founder posts from company-page posts so you know which channel actually moves traffic. Personal profiles routinely out-reach company pages; UTMs prove (or disprove) that for your audience.

### Employee advocacy

Give each employee a unique utm_content tag to measure their share-driven impact. This also surfaces which teams' networks convert, which is useful when deciding where to invest enablement time.

### LinkedIn newsletters

Tag every link in each newsletter edition with utm_campaign=<newsletter>-<edition> so you can compare editions and see which topics drive real site visits, not just impressions.

### InMail and Message Ads

Use utm_medium=inmail so one-to-one outreach traffic never gets mixed into your feed metrics. Message-driven clicks behave differently (higher intent, lower volume) and deserve their own line in reporting.
