## Tracking email clicks beyond the open

Open rates are noisy at best (and now Apple Mail Privacy Protection is hostile). Click attribution via UTMs is the most reliable signal you have.

Use utm_source for the sender (newsletter name), utm_medium=email, and utm_campaign for the specific send. Add utm_content to A/B test buttons vs. text links.

Understand what your ESP does to links before they reach the inbox: Mailchimp, Klaviyo, Customer.io, and virtually every other platform rewrite links through their own click-tracking domain, then redirect to your URL. Your UTMs survive the redirect — but it means the click your ESP reports and the session your analytics reports are measured at different points, so small discrepancies are normal.

Clicks get inflated too, not just opens. Corporate security scanners (Outlook Safe Links, Barracuda, Mimecast and similar) pre-fetch links in incoming mail to check them for phishing, registering 'clicks' no human made. If a send to B2B audiences shows suspiciously instant clicks at delivery time, that's usually scanners. UTMs can't stop this, but session behavior in analytics (zero-duration, no scroll) helps you discount it.

Most ESPs support merge tags inside URLs, which makes per-send tagging automatic: drop the campaign name or send date variable into utm_campaign once in your template and every send self-labels. Check your platform's syntax — each ESP has its own — and verify the rendered URL in a test send before trusting it.

A convention that scales: utm_source identifies the list or program (newsletter, product-updates, lifecycle), utm_campaign identifies the specific send (2026-w29 or welcome-day-3), and utm_content identifies the link position (hero-cta, footer-link, ps-line). With that trio you can answer 'which sends drive revenue' and 'which link placement converts' from one report.

One caution: some analytics tools treat any change of query parameters as a new page. If your site relies on canonical URLs for SEO or caching, confirm your platform ignores utm_* for those purposes (most do) — and never put personally identifying values like email addresses in UTM parameters. They end up in every downstream report and log.

## Common use cases

### Newsletter sends

Tag every newsletter so you can compare CTR across subjects, segments, and editions. With utm_campaign per edition you can rank a year of sends by actual site engagement, not opens.

### Lifecycle automation

Distinguish welcome, onboarding, and re-engagement sequences in your analytics. Tagging each step (welcome-day-1, welcome-day-3) reveals where sequences stop pulling people back.

### Cold outreach

Measure which outbound campaigns and subject lines actually drive site visits. Sequence tools rewrite links too — UTMs keep attribution intact through their redirects.

### Transactional footers

Receipts and notification emails get opened at very high rates. A tagged footer link measures how much site traffic that overlooked surface quietly drives.

### Link-position testing

Keep source/medium/campaign fixed and vary only utm_content (hero-cta vs footer-link vs ps-line) to learn where in the email your audience actually clicks.
