## How Discord embeds work

Discord reads Open Graph and oEmbed metadata to build the embed card you see in channels.

Embeds are cached per-server. Edit the message to force Discord to re-fetch the metadata.

Discord layers its metadata sources: oEmbed first for sites that publish it (which is how YouTube and Spotify links get playable embeds), then Open Graph, then bare HTML fallbacks. For a normal website, OG tags are what you control — og:title, og:description, og:image, and optionally og:site_name, which Discord displays above the title in the embed card.

Discord has one genuinely unique tag in common use: theme-color. The meta name='theme-color' value becomes the embed's left accent stripe, the little vertical bar that makes an embed feel branded. It costs one line of HTML and is the single cheapest polish win for links that live in Discord communities.

Image handling differs from other platforms in a useful way: og:image renders as a large image in the embed body, while twitter:card=summary makes Discord render the image as a small thumbnail beside the text instead. If your links show a giant image where you wanted a compact card (or vice versa), that interaction between the two tag families is usually the lever.

Discord's embeds render on dark backgrounds for most users (light theme exists, but dark dominates Discord culture). Share images designed for white feeds — dark text on transparent or white — can look washed out or invisible in an embed. If Discord communities are a real channel for you, sanity-check your og:image against a dark backdrop.

For gaming, dev-tool, and community products, Discord is often the highest-volume place links get shared, and much of that sharing is done by bots and webhooks. Bot-posted links unfurl with the same OG rules as human-posted ones — but bots can also construct rich custom embeds via the API that ignore your OG tags entirely. Know which mechanism your integration uses before debugging the wrong one.
