# Share a password as a one-time link, or shorten a URL, without leaving Slack

Type `/secret` and the password. LinkPilot replies only to you with a link that opens once and is then gone. Post the link, not the password.

## Stop pasting passwords into channels

`/secret hunter2 --ttl 1h` replies only to you with a one-time link. The text never appears in the channel and never sits in history.

## Shorten a link in place

`/shorten https://example.com/a/very/long/page` replies with a short, tracked link and a button to post it to the channel.

## Rescue a password someone already pasted

Open the message menu and choose **Send as secret link**. The text becomes a one-time link you can share instead, so the original can be deleted.

## How secrets are handled

Your text is encrypted by LinkPilot's Slack service in memory and only the ciphertext is stored. The decryption key travels in the link's `#` fragment, which browsers never send to a server. The text is never logged, never stored and never posted. The link is hosted by LinkPilot, outside Slack.

The text does pass through Slack and through our service on its way to being encrypted. For anything where it must never leave your own device, use the LinkPilot web app (https://uselinkpilot.com/tools/free-secret-link-generator), where encryption happens in your browser. The Slack app is the convenient path; the web app is the strictest one.

## Install

1. Press **Add to Slack** and approve. The app asks for one permission, `commands`.
2. Run `/secret` or `/shorten` once. You will get a private **Connect LinkPilot** button. Create an API key at https://uselinkpilot.com/app/api-keys and paste it. Every plan has API keys, including Free.
3. Run the command again. That is the whole setup, once per person.

Uninstalling the app from Slack deletes the workspace record and every stored connection at once.

## Questions

### Does the channel ever see the secret?

No. /secret replies only to you. The channel sees a link, and only if you press Post to channel. The text is never posted and never sits in channel history.

### How is the text protected?

The text is encrypted by LinkPilot's Slack service in memory and only the ciphertext is stored. The decryption key travels in the link's # fragment, which browsers never send to a server. The text is never logged, never stored and never posted. It does pass through Slack and through our service on its way to being encrypted, so for anything where the text must never leave your own device, create the link in the LinkPilot web app, where encryption happens in your browser.

One bot scope, commands. It registers the /secret and /shorten commands and the Send as secret link shortcut. The app cannot read your channels or messages; the shortcut only receives the single message you choose.

### Do we share one LinkPilot account across the workspace?

No. Each person connects their own LinkPilot API key once, so limits and history stay per person. API keys are on every plan, including Free. Uninstalling the app removes every stored connection for the workspace.

### How long does a secret link live?

Until it is opened once, or until it expires. The default is 24 hours; add --ttl 1h, 6h, 24h or 7d to /secret to change it.
