## How it works

1. 01
   ### Paste a password, a key, or a file
Encrypted in your browser before anything is sent. Burn after read is on for every anonymous secret.
2. 02
   ### Send the link
One URL. The key after the # stays in the browser and never reaches our servers.
3. 03
   ### The stored secret is gone
The first open burns the ciphertext. A second visit, by anyone, meets the destroyed page.

Browser-side encryption shipped on 29 September 2026. Secrets created before that date were stored as plaintext until they expired, and a file's name, size and type are still visible to us. Read the full security model (https://uselinkpilot.com/security-architecture).

## What Privnote does, in its own words

Privnote's homepage says it sends notes that will self-destruct after being read: write the note, encrypt it and get a link, send the link, and the note self-destructs when the recipient reads it. Its options let you set the note to self-destruct after reading or after one hour, 24 hours, seven days or 30 days, add a manual password, and receive an email when the note is destroyed. The page states that the note is encrypted in your browser and then stored in Privnote. It needs no account.

That is a sound design for a personal note, and sites like Privnote exist because the idea works. The limits are everything around the note: there is no dashboard to see or revoke the notes you have sent, no file attachments, and no team or audit features.

## Privnote vs LinkPilot: the differences that matter

Both encrypt in the browser. LinkPilot uses AES-GCM-256 with the key in the link fragment and publishes the encryption code with test vectors in its CLI repository. On top of the note itself, a free LinkPilot account lists every secret you have sent with its status, lets you revoke one before it is read, and attaches files that are encrypted the same way. Pro (https://uselinkpilot.com/pricing) adds a passphrase that is mixed into the decryption key, a custom expiry date and time, and an audit timeline of each view, burn and revoke. Short links with analytics live in the same workspace on a separate pipeline.

## When Privnote is the better fit

If you want to send one anonymous note with no account anywhere and no record of it, Privnote does that with fewer steps than signing up for anything. Its 30-day option is also longer than LinkPilot's seven-day maximum on free plans. LinkPilot's free creator matches the no-account case; the account features are for people who send secrets often and want to see and control them afterwards.
