## How it works

1. 01
   ### Paste a password, a key, or a file
Encrypted in your browser before anything is sent. Burn after read is on for every anonymous secret.
2. 02
   ### Send the link
One URL. The key after the # stays in the browser and never reaches our servers.
3. 03
   ### The stored secret is gone
The first open burns the ciphertext. A second visit, by anyone, meets the destroyed page.

Browser-side encryption shipped on 29 September 2026. Secrets created before that date were stored as plaintext until they expired, and a file's name, size and type are still visible to us. Read the full security model (https://uselinkpilot.com/security-architecture).

## What OneTimeSecret offers, per its own pages

Onetime Secret is the long-standing one-time secret tool. Its homepage says the text will be encrypted and available only once, that the data is permanently destroyed once the recipient opens the link, and that no one, including Onetime Secret, can retrieve it after that. Its security pages say secrets are encrypted in transit and at rest on every plan, that every secret carries an expiration configurable within a plan's limits, that a passphrase is optional, and that you can choose the region where data is stored. The documentation links to a GitHub repository for self-hosting, and the homepage says the service is free for individuals and teams.

## One time secret alternative: what changes with LinkPilot

LinkPilot encrypts the secret in your browser with AES-GCM-256 and keeps the key after the # in the link, so our servers never hold what they would need to read it. Onetime Secret's pages describe encryption in transit and at rest; as of the check date they do not say whether the secret is encrypted in your browser or on their servers, so we make no claim about that either way. If the distinction matters to you, ask them, or read our security architecture (https://uselinkpilot.com/security-architecture) page and the open-source CLI's test vectors for our side.

Around the secret, LinkPilot adds a workspace: a list of every secret with its status, revocation before it is read, file attachments encrypted the same way, team roles, and branded short links with analytics on a separate pipeline. Pro (https://uselinkpilot.com/pricing) adds a passphrase mixed into the decryption key, a custom expiry date and time, and an audit timeline of each view, burn and revoke.

## When OneTimeSecret is the better fit

If you want to run the service yourself, Onetime Secret is the right choice: LinkPilot cannot be self-hosted. If you want to choose the region where the secret is stored, Onetime Secret offers that and LinkPilot does not. And if an occasional personal secret is all you ever send, both free tiers do the job and there is little reason to switch. The full comparison (https://uselinkpilot.com/compare/linkpilot-vs-onetimesecret) sets the features side by side.
