# One time link

## How it works

## What a one-time link does

A one-time link carries something, in this case text you paste, to one reader. When they open it and reveal the contents, the stored copy is destroyed and the link becomes a dead end. It is the right tool for anything you would rather not leave sitting in an inbox: a password, an API key, a licence code, a private note.

The link is made in your browser. The text is encrypted there with AES-GCM-256, the key is appended after the # so it never reaches a server, and only the ciphertext is stored under a random slug.

## One-time link generator, no account needed

The generator at the top of this page creates the link immediately. There is nothing to install and nothing for the recipient to sign up for; any browser can open it. Unopened links expire after seven days. With a free account you can set one hour, 24 hours or seven days and revoke a link before it is opened. Pro (https://uselinkpilot.com/pricing) adds a passphrase, a custom expiry and the audit timeline.

## One-time links for files and for URLs

To send a file once, create the secret from a free account and attach the file; it is encrypted the same way and burns with the link.
