# Link analytics with geographic click data: what location tells you and what it does not

How link analytics estimates the country, region and city of a click, how accurate that is, how to read the reports sensibly, and the privacy rules to follow.

LinkPilot Team (https://uselinkpilot.com/author/linkpilot-team) · The people who build and run LinkPilot at TetraCore, LLC October 26, 2026 · About LinkPilot (https://uselinkpilot.com/about)

Where did the clicks come from? For a newsletter sent to one country the answer is dull. For a product launch, a multi-region campaign, a partner link or a printed QR code (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#qr-code), the answer changes what you do next. Link analytics with geographic click data gives you that answer, with limits worth understanding before you act on a map.

This guide covers how the location of a click is estimated and how much to trust it, how to collect it consistently, how to read the patterns, and how to keep it on the right side of privacy rules.

## How a click gets a location

When someone clicks a short link (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#short-link), the request arrives from an IP address. The shortener looks that address up in a geolocation database, which maps ranges of addresses to the networks that own them and the areas those networks serve, and records the result as country, region and city. The lookup happens at click time, so the IP itself does not need to be stored. LinkPilot keeps a salted hash in its place for unique counting and discards the address.

Accuracy falls as the resolution rises:

| Level | Typical accuracy | When it goes wrong | | --- | --- | --- | | Country | Very high | VPNs, corporate networks routed through another country | | Region or state | Good | Mobile carriers with national address pools | | City | Rough | Carrier hubs, VPN exits, satellite and rural ISPs |

A click from a mobile phone on a national carrier may resolve to the carrier's data centre two hundred kilometres away. A click through a corporate VPN resolves to wherever the VPN exits. Country-level numbers survive these effects well. City-level numbers do not, so treat them as an indication rather than a measurement.

## Collect it consistently

Geographic data (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#geographic-data) is only comparable if the links behind it are built the same way.

- **One link per channel or placement**, so a country spike can be traced to the email, the post or the poster that caused it.
- **Readable slugs and tags** such as `launch-email-eu` and `launch-print-apac`, so the report groups cleanly.
- **The same destination and UTM tags** across regional variants, unless you are deliberately sending regions to different pages.
- **A test click from each region** before launch, using a colleague or a VPN exit, to confirm the location appears as expected and the destination loads there.

Every click on a LinkPilot link records country, region and city along with referrer (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#referrer), device, browser and a bot flag, and the analytics view filters by country, so the geographic breakdown is in the same report as everything else rather than a separate product.

## Read the patterns

**Compare clicks to audience, not to each other.** Four hundred clicks from the US and forty from Ireland says nothing until you know the list has 20,000 US subscribers and 400 Irish ones. Ireland is the engaged market in that example.

**Give every country a full day.** A link sent at 9 a.m. Eastern lands at 2 p.m. in London and midnight in Sydney. The first hour's map is a map of who was awake. Compare countries over 24 to 48 hours.

**Expect the small to be noisy.** Ten clicks from a city is not a trend. Set a floor, say fifty clicks, before you read anything into a region, and more before you read anything into a city.

**Separate bots.** Email security scanners click from their own data centres, often in a different country from the recipient. Exclude flagged bots before looking at the map or you will discover a strong following in a city that is actually a security vendor's office.

**Look for the unexpected referrer.** Clicks from a country you did not send to, arriving from a social platform or a forum, mean the link was shared. That is usually good news and worth following up.

## Act on it

Geographic data earns its place when it changes a decision.

- **Schedule by local time.** If Australian clicks arrive at midnight, send the Asia-Pacific segment separately at their morning.
- **Localise where engagement is high and conversion is low.** A country that clicks but does not sign up may be hitting a page in the wrong language or a price in the wrong currency.
- **Prioritise markets with evidence.** A region that over-performs relative to its audience size is a cheaper place to grow than one that needs persuading.
- **Measure offline campaigns.** A QR code (https://uselinkpilot.com/tools/qr-code-generator) on a poster in one city should produce clicks in that city. If it produces clicks everywhere, the poster has been photographed and shared, which is a different kind of success.
- **Pair location with outcome.** Link clicks tell you where interest is. Match the campaign in your web analytics or CRM to see where revenue is. The attribution guide (https://uselinkpilot.com/blog/practical-multi-touch-attribution) covers how.

## Privacy and data quality

Country and region from an IP, used in aggregate, is ordinary analytics. Keep it that way:

- **Say it in the privacy notice**: links are tracked and approximate location is recorded.
- **Do not store the IP.** A hash for unique counting is enough.
- **Do not join city data to identity.** A click's city plus a per-customer link is a location record about a person; treat it under the rules that apply to personal data (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#pii) or do not build it.
- **Set a retention period** and stick to it. Reports older than the campaigns they describe are liability, not insight.
- **Limit who sees it.** Aggregate country counts can be shared widely. Anything finer should stay with the people who need it.

The modern guide to link tracking (https://uselinkpilot.com/blog/modern-link-tracking) covers what each click field records and what it deliberately does not, which is the right place to start if you are writing the privacy notice.
