# How to use short link performance reports by campaign

Set up short links that report by campaign: one link per channel, tags that group them, matching UTM tags, and a monthly routine turning clicks into decisions.

LinkPilot Team (https://uselinkpilot.com/author/linkpilot-team) · The people who build and run LinkPilot at TetraCore, LLC October 26, 2026 · About LinkPilot (https://uselinkpilot.com/about)

A campaign report that says "2,400 clicks" is a number without a decision attached. The useful version says the email produced 1,900 of them, the social post 400, the partner link 100, and the paid ad nothing worth paying for. Short link performance reports by campaign get you from the first kind to the second, provided the links were built to be reported on.

This guide covers how to set links up so they roll up by campaign, which metrics to read, how to segment, how to avoid the common misreadings, and a monthly routine that keeps the reports turning into changes.

## Build links that can be reported on

Reporting by campaign is decided when the links are created, not when the report is run.

1. **Name the campaign once**, in a form that works as a tag and as a UTM value: `q4-renewal`, `launch-nov-2026`. Lowercase, hyphens, no spaces.
2. **Create one short link per channel and placement.** Email button, email footer, LinkedIn post, partner newsletter, print. Each gets a slug (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#slug) that says what it is: `go.brand.com/q4-renewal-email`.
3. **Tag each link** with the campaign name and the channel. In LinkPilot, tags are filterable in the links list and the analytics view, so a campaign's links are one filter away.
4. **Put matching UTM tags on the destination**, built with the UTM builder (https://uselinkpilot.com/tools/utm-builder): `utm_campaign` equal to the campaign tag, `utm_source` and `utm_medium` equal to the channel. The short link counts the click; the UTM tags let your web analytics group the visit under the same name.
5. **Test every link** on a phone before launch: redirect (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#redirect), HTTPS, UTM tags intact on arrival, click visible in the report.

Write the naming rule down where the team can see it. Most campaign reporting problems are naming problems discovered three weeks late.

## Pick metrics that match the goal

| Campaign goal | Lead metric | Supporting metrics | | --- | --- | --- | | Awareness or reach | Unique clicks | Country and device mix, new referrers | | Engagement | Total clicks per unique | Repeat clicks, time-of-day pattern | | Channel comparison | Unique clicks per channel, CTR where impressions exist | Bot share, device split | | Conversion | Outcomes from analytics or CRM, matched by campaign | Clicks to conversion ratio per channel |

Click-through rate needs a denominator. Email gives you opens or sends, ads give you impressions, a printed poster gives you nothing. Compare CTR only between channels that both have one. Elsewhere, compare unique clicks (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#unique-clicks) against the size of the audience each channel reached.

## Segment the campaign

Once the links are tagged, segmenting is filtering.

- **By channel**: which link produced the clicks. This is the decision most campaigns actually need.
- **By placement within a channel**: button versus footer link, first post versus reminder. Cheap to test, often decisive.
- **By device and country**: a channel that over-indexes on mobile or on one region may need a different landing page there. The geographic data guide (https://uselinkpilot.com/blog/link-analytics-with-geographic-click-data) covers how far to trust the location.
- **By time**: clicks by hour since send show how long a channel keeps working. Email dies in two days; a help-centre link lives for months.
- **By traffic type**: organic, paid and partner links should be separate links, so they are separate rows, not one blended number.

LinkPilot's analytics view filters by tag, country, device and browser and can exclude flagged bots, and the result can be exported or published as a shareable report page for a client or a manager who does not have a dashboard login.

## Read the numbers in context

**Bots first.** Email security scanners click every link in a message within seconds of delivery. A campaign that shows a hundred clicks a minute after sending has been scanned. Exclude flagged bots before reading anything else.

**Unique before total.** Total clicks (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#total-clicks) divided by unique clicks is an engagement ratio. A ratio near one means people clicked once; a ratio of three means something was worth returning to, or the link was in a place people kept reopening.

**Mind the gap with web analytics.** The short link counts redirects. The site counts page loads with scripts allowed. Expect the site to show 10 to 30 percent fewer. A much larger gap points at a slow destination or a redirect chain (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#redirect-chain), which the redirect checker (https://uselinkpilot.com/tools/redirect-checker) will reveal.

**Compare fairly.** Same window, same audience size, same offer. A reminder email always underperforms the first send; that is not a finding.

**Spikes have causes.** A sudden burst from one referrer (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#referrer) means the link was shared somewhere. A sudden burst from one country with no referrer is often a scanner or a scraper. Look before celebrating.

## Turn the report into changes

A campaign report should end with a list of things to do differently.

- **Move the call to action** to the placement that won.
- **Shift effort toward the channel** with the best unique clicks per audience member, or the best conversions per click if you have outcome data.
- **Fix underperformers without breaking continuity.** Edit the destination of an existing short link rather than creating a new one, so the report keeps its history and printed links keep working.
- **Record the decision** next to the report, so the next campaign starts from what was learned rather than from scratch.

## A monthly routine

1. Filter the month's links by campaign tag.
2. Exclude bots, read unique clicks per channel against audience size.
3. Pull conversions for the same campaign name from web analytics or the CRM and put them beside the clicks.
4. Export (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#link-import) the view or share the report page with whoever owns the budget.
5. Write three lines: what worked, what did not, what changes next month.

Do that for three months and the reports stop being a chore. They become the reason the fourth campaign is better than the first.
