# How to choose a branded URL platform for startup teams

What a startup needs from a branded URL platform now and later: custom domain, click analytics, team roles, API, and a free tier that does not punish growth.

LinkPilot Team (https://uselinkpilot.com/author/linkpilot-team) · The people who build and run LinkPilot at TetraCore, LLC October 26, 2026 · About LinkPilot (https://uselinkpilot.com/about)

A startup's first short links are made in whatever tool was free that afternoon. Six months later the links are on a generic domain, in a personal account that belongs to someone who left, with no analytics and no way to change where they point. Choosing a branded URL platform for startup teams is about not ending up there, without paying enterprise prices to avoid it.

This guide covers what a branded URL platform does for a small team, which features matter at which stage, a comparison test you can run in an afternoon, and how to set the workflow up so the choice holds as the team grows.

## What a branded URL platform does for a startup

Three things, in order of how soon you notice them.

**Trust.** `yourbrand.link/launch` is recognised. `bit.ly/3Xq9` is the same string spammers use. In cold outreach, print and SMS the domain alone changes the click rate.

**Evidence.** Every click through a branded link (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#branded-link) is recorded with time, referrer (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#referrer), device and country before the redirect (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#redirect). That is attribution (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#attribution) data for channels your website cannot see: a podcast mention, a conference slide, a partner's newsletter.

**Control.** A short link (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#short-link) whose destination you can edit outlives the landing page it pointed to. The link in the investor deck, the pitch video and the printed one-pager keeps working when the site is rebuilt.

## Which features matter, and when

| Stage | Must have | Nice to have | Not yet | | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Founders only | Custom domain, click analytics, free or cheap tier | Tags, editable destinations | Roles, SSO | | First marketing hire | Tags or collections, UTM support, bot filtering, exports | API, Slack app | Client workspaces | | Paid campaigns running | Campaign reporting, shareable reports, redirect checks | Link rules and A/B splits, QR codes | White label | | Agency or clients involved | Roles, isolated workspaces per client | White-label reports | |

Two features deserve attention earlier than people expect. **Team roles**, because the second person with access should not be able to delete the first person's links. **Export (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#link-import) and portability**, because the platform you choose at ten people may not be the one you want at fifty, and a platform that cannot export your links and their history owns you.

## Check the shape of the pricing as well as the price

Startup link usage is spiky. A post lands, a link gets fifty thousand clicks in a day, and some platforms respond by cutting the link off or demanding an upgrade mid-campaign. Read the limits:

- **Links per month** and whether old links count against it.
- **Clicks per month** and what happens at the cap: throttling, blocking or an invoice.
- **Custom domains** per plan, and the price of the first one.
- **Analytics history**: seven days is fine for a test, useless for a quarterly review.
- **Seats**: per-user pricing punishes the small team that wants everyone to make links.

For reference, LinkPilot's Free plan includes 50 short links, 1,000 tracked clicks a month, three team members and five secret links. Pro at $29 a month covers up to ten team members, five custom domains and the longer analytics history, and the API (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#api) is on every plan including Free. The Bitly pricing explainer (https://uselinkpilot.com/blog/bitly-pricing-explained) and Bitly alternatives (https://uselinkpilot.com/blog/best-bitly-alternatives) show how the usual options compare.

## Run the afternoon test

Shortlist three platforms and give each the same hour.

1. **Connect a custom domain.** Time how long until a link on it loads over HTTPS. Anything requiring a support ticket fails.
2. **Create five links** with a campaign tag and UTM-tagged destinations. Check the UTM tags survive the redirect using the redirect checker (https://uselinkpilot.com/tools/redirect-checker).
3. **Click each from a phone and a laptop**, then look at the report: device, referrer, country, and whether a test from an email scanner is flagged as a bot.
4. **Edit a destination** after sharing the link. Confirm the short URL did not change.
5. **Invite a teammate with a limited role** and confirm what they cannot do.
6. **Export** the links and analytics. Open the file.
7. **Read the upgrade path.** What happens at the click cap, and what does the next plan cost?

The platform that passes all seven is the shortlist. Choose between survivors on the features your next stage needs, not on the ones the sales page leads with.

## Set up the workflow on day one

The platform matters less than the habits around it.

- **Own the account as a company**, with a shared billing email and at least two admins, so a departure does not lock the links.
- **One naming rule**: campaign, channel, placement. Write it down.
- **Tag everything** with campaign and channel from the first link.
- **UTM tags on every destination**, built with the UTM builder (https://uselinkpilot.com/tools/utm-builder).
- **Branded domain for anything external**, the default domain only for internal scratch links.
- **A monthly ten minutes**: run the redirect check, archive dead links, read the campaign report.

The dashboard guide (https://uselinkpilot.com/blog/how-to-manage-and-organize-campaign-links-in-one-dashboard) has the full structure.

## Pitfalls that cost startups later

- **Links in a personal account.** Migrate them now; it only gets harder.
- **Generic domain in print.** The flyer outlives the decision.
- **No tags.** A year of clicks nobody can attribute.
- **Destinations that were never updated.** Old links pointing at pages that moved, found by the redirect check you did not run.
- **Treating the shortener as a trust signal.** A branded link makes your link recognisable; it does not make the destination safe. Audit what you link to with the link trust score (https://uselinkpilot.com/tools/link-trust-score) before a campaign goes out.

Pick a platform you can leave, set up the habits you would keep if you did, and the branded links you make this quarter will still be working and still be yours when the company is ten times the size.
