# Custom domain link shortener with click reports: how to choose and set it up

What to look for in a custom domain link shortener with click reports, how to connect the domain with a CNAME, and how to read analytics for custom domain links.

LinkPilot Team (https://uselinkpilot.com/author/linkpilot-team) · The people who build and run LinkPilot at TetraCore, LLC October 26, 2026 · About LinkPilot (https://uselinkpilot.com/about)

A link shortener on your own domain does two jobs at once. The domain tells the reader who the link belongs to, so it gets clicked. The click report tells you who clicked, so you learn something. A custom domain link shortener with click reports is the combination, and most of the decisions are about the second half.

This guide covers what to look for before you choose a provider, how to connect the domain, how to set up links so the reports mean something, and how to read analytics for custom domain links without drawing the wrong conclusion from a number.

## How a custom domain changes the link

The redirect (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#redirect) is the same whether the link is `bit.ly/3xYz` or `go.yourbrand.com/spring-sale`. Someone clicks, the shortener records the click, and sends them to the destination with a 301 or 302. What changes is what the reader sees before they click: a domain they know rather than a generic one that is also used by phishing (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#phishing) kits. In email, print and SMS that recognition is the difference between a click and a delete.

The click report also benefits. Clicks on your domain are yours; the provider cannot pool them with anyone else's, and if you ever move providers, the domain and the slugs come with you.

## What to look for before you choose

| Feature | Why it matters | What to check | | --- | --- | --- | | Click fields | A count alone cannot explain a spike | Referrer, device, browser, country, bot flag, time | | Unique vs total | Reach and engagement are different numbers | How uniqueness is estimated, and whether IPs are stored | | Reporting window | Campaigns are compared over months | How much history each plan keeps | | Bot filtering | Email scanners click every link | Whether known bots are flagged or silently included | | Tags or campaigns | Links need grouping to compare | Filter by tag, export by group | | Export and sharing | Reports leave the dashboard | CSV export, shareable report pages | | Domain setup | DNS mistakes take sites down | CNAME on a subdomain, automatic TLS | | Editable destinations | Printed links outlive landing pages | Change the destination without changing the URL |

LinkPilot records referrer (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#referrer), device type (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#device-type), browser, operating system (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#operating-system), country, region and city for each click, flags known bots, and stores a salted hash in place of the IP address (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#ip-address) so unique clicks (https://uselinkpilot.com/glossary#unique-clicks) can be counted without keeping who clicked. The Free plan keeps seven days of history; paid plans keep more. Reports can be exported, and a link's analytics can be published as a page you share with someone who has no dashboard login. Custom domains are a Pro feature, five included at $29 per month.

## Connect the domain

1. **Pick a subdomain** of a domain you control: `go.`, `link.` or a short brand word. Leave the main domain's DNS alone.
2. **Add the domain in LinkPilot**, under Domains.
3. **Create the CNAME record** it gives you at your DNS provider. Nothing else on the domain changes.
4. **Wait for verification.** LinkPilot checks the record and provisions a TLS certificate through Cloudflare, so HTTPS works without uploading anything. The Domains page shows the verification and SSL status.
5. **Test before you share.** Create a link, open it on a phone and a laptop, confirm the redirect lands on the right page over HTTPS, and confirm the click shows in the report. Then send a test link through the channels you will use, because email scanners and chat previews behave differently from a browser.

The how to shorten a URL (https://uselinkpilot.com/blog/how-to-shorten-a-url) guide covers slug conventions and when a link should be on your own domain.

## Set links up so the report is readable

A report is only as good as the links behind it.

- **One link per placement you will compare.** The email button, the social post and the printed insert each get their own slug. One link in all three tells you nothing.
- **Readable slugs.** `go.brand.com/oct-webinar-email` reads in a report; a random string does not.
- **Tags for grouping.** Tag every link with the campaign and the channel so you can filter a quarter's links in two clicks.
- **UTM tags on the destination**, built once with the UTM builder (https://uselinkpilot.com/tools/utm-builder), so the visit also shows up in your web analytics under the same campaign name. The short link counts the click; the UTM tag labels the visit.
- **Edit destinations, not links.** When a landing page moves, change the destination in the dashboard. Printed links keep working and the report keeps its history.

## Reading analytics for custom domain links

Four habits keep the numbers honest.

**Filter bots first.** Email security tools and chat previews open links before any human does. A campaign that shows forty clicks in the first minute after sending has been scanned, not read. Exclude flagged bots before comparing anything.

**Lead with unique clicks.** Total clicks measure engagement from the people who arrived; unique clicks measure how many arrived. One enthusiastic reader is not a trend.

**Expect the website number to be lower.** The short link counts the click; the site counts the page load. People close tabs, block scripts, and lose connection on mobile. A gap of 10 to 30 percent is normal. A gap of 80 percent means the destination is slow or the redirect chain is broken, which the redirect checker (https://uselinkpilot.com/tools/redirect-checker) will show.

**Compare like with like.** Same period, same audience size, same position in the message. Then act on the differences: move the call to action, change the copy, drop the channel that never clicks. The modern guide to link tracking (https://uselinkpilot.com/blog/modern-link-tracking) covers what each click field can and cannot tell you.

## Keep it running

- **Assign owners** to domains and campaign tags so nobody wonders whether a link can be retired.
- **Protect the account.** A branded domain redirecting to a phishing page is your brand's problem, so require strong authentication and limit who can edit destinations.
- **Review quarterly.** Retire links that no longer point anywhere useful and archive campaigns whose reporting is done.

A custom domain gets the click. The report tells you what the click was worth. Set both up once, properly, and every link you share from then on comes with its own evidence.
